Depression does not always look like sadness.
For some adults, one of the more noticeable changes in their mood is a shorter temper. Everyday interruptions that didn’t bother you before may feel unusually frustrating. Conversations require more patience than you have available, and small problems can lead to reactions that feel larger than the situation.
Irritability alone does not necessarily mean that someone is experiencing depression. Other factors, such as stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, physical health concerns and difficult circumstances, can all affect your patience and overall mental health. However, when irritability represents a change from how you normally feel and appears alongside low energy, withdrawal or a loss of interest in life, it may be worth discussing with a therapist.
Irritability is not limited to visible anger or frequent arguments. It may feel like a persistent sense of tension, restlessness or sometimes emotional exhaustion. You may recognize that you are reacting differently, but have difficulty explaining why.

Here are a few changes you may notice:
Although you may be struggling with depression, you are still going into work, caring for your family and completing important responsibilities. From the outside, very little may appear to have changed. Internally, however, it may feel as though your emotional capacity has become increasingly limited. You do not have to experience all of those changes to begin discussing depression with your therapist. Any mood changes deserve attention.

Depression can affect your energy, concentration, motivation and the ability to manage everyday stress. When ordinary tasks require more effort, there may be less emotional energy available for unexpected problems or additional demands. The strain on your mental health can appear as frustration or anger. Someone who feels disconnected or discouraged may become more reactive when plans change, responsibilities accumulate or they feel misunderstood. Irritability may also create conflict in important relationships, which can contribute to relationship issues, guilt, isolation or additional self-criticism.
For some of our clients, anger may feel more familiar or easier to express than sadness, disappointment or vulnerability. They may recognize that they are frustrated without immediately connecting that reaction to changes in their overall mood.
A difficult day or stressful week can affect anyone’s patience. It may be time to speak with one of our qualified mental health providers when the mood changes stay around for longer than usual, begin to affect your relationships or appear alongside other symptoms.

Depression symptoms that continue for two weeks or longer may be a reason to seek a therapy appointment with Krueger Wellness Institute. You do not need to experience every possible symptom, and you do not need to wait until your life feels unmanageable before starting a conversation. Help is here now.
Irritability can also be associated with anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, burnout, ADHD, grief, sleep disruption, medication changes or physical health concerns. More than one factor may be contributing at the same time. This is why it can be difficult to determine the cause based on one symptom. Discussing your experiences and current and past mental health concerns with your therapist can help determine if you’re experiencing depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc., and provide you with a clear path to a healthier wellbeing.
The purpose is not to place a label on every difficult emotion. Our goal is to develop a clearer understanding of your experience so you can identify the support that may be most helpful.
